Abstract

The main distribution of AC power on ships has a higher impedance value than DC electricity, thus providing greater distribution losses. Due to the large losses in the distribution system, a larger power output is required to balance the required power and lost power. In an effort to reduce the impedance value in the electricity distribution on board, the main electricity distribution system was reconfigured from AC to DC. Changes made will affect the amount of short circuit current that may occur. The addition of a photovoltaic hybrid as a power source will cause a change in the value of the short circuit. Short circuit is a common disturbance in the form of excess current that often occurs in the electricity on board, either due to internal or external factors. This research uses electrical distribution system simulator software to compare the amount of short circuit current that contributes to each type of distribution. The simulation results will be analyzed to compare which one is better used as the main power distribution between AC and DC electricity. In this study, the average value of short circuit current that occurs in sailing conditions before reconfiguration is 10,494 kA while after reconfiguration is 1,844 kA. Then in loading/unloading conditions, the average value of short circuit current before reconfiguration is 13,401 kA compared to after reconfiguration, which is 1,686 kA. In addition, an analysis was also carried out on the condition of the leaving/arriving port which obtained the average value of the short circuit current that occurred was 12.897 kA while after reconfiguration was 2.003 kA. Finally, in the at port condition, the average value of short circuit current before reconfiguration is 6.090 kA and after reconfiguration is 1.243 kA. Short circuit current disturbances that may occur need to be secured through a protective coordination using a circuit breaker.
