Abstract

Reducing logistic costs is an important aspect in reducing the overall cost of product. Lean logistics offers a solution to this challenge by identifying waste within the logistic processes, and providing countermeasures through proceses re engineering and introduce new equipment to reduce processing time This research focuses on the inbound logistics of local and imported parts.in automotive company facing a challenge to reduce the cost of inbound logistics.. An analysis of cost reduction through Value Stream Mapping (VSM) or Material Information Flow Chart (MIFC), Process Activity Mapping, and Toyota Production System’s own four rules of logistics found that all logistic processes in both local and imported parts are Necessary Non-Value Added (NNVA). Lean logistics have been in place in the local parts but not in the imported parts, especially relating to external processes. The analysis also identifies driving factors of logistic costs for both imported and local parts. Factors identified for imported parts are the efficiency and number of modules and containers. For local parts, the factors are truck efficiency, truck utilization, truck loading efficiency, and distance covered in each route; all influencing the number of necessary trips. These results are used to make deriverecommendations for improvements. The improved processes result in a cost reduction of approximately 28% of the target for imported parts. This reduction could be achieved through changing shipment patterns and the use of high cube containers. For local parts, cost reduction is 25.4% of the target, which was derived from reducing the number of trips made and increasing loading efficiency.
