Abstract

Composites are made from polymers (polypropylene) and organic fibers (nanocellulose) have weaknesses in bond strength. One way to overcome this weakness is to add a coupling agent. Maleic Anhydride Polypropylene (MAPP) is a coupling agent to increase the bond between matrix and filler in composites based on polypropylene matrix. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the effect of adding MAPP on morphology, mechanical properties and sound absorption properties. The MAPP mass fraction used was 2%wt, 4%wt, and 6%wt, while the mass fraction of nanocellulose used was 6%wt. The tests carried out were digital microscope testing, Flame Retardant testing, sound absorption testing (α), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) structure testing, density physical properties testing, and material compressed testing. The results showed that nanocellulose with MAPP addition had the lowest sound absorption value with 4% MAPP of 0.13-0.10. The results of the Flame Retardant test show that the fire resistance of pre PP can increase after being given the addition of % MAPP. The FTIR test results show a wavenumber of 3000 cm-1 and 1000 cm-1 where MAPP added which no ester bond and OH bond. Hardness test results show that the amount with the addition of % MAPP and nanocellulose can reduce the Hardness value of a material and addition ofMAPP. The result density of the sample increased along with the %MAPP used, where the highest density is owned by the 6% MAPP sample by 0.943 ± 0.015 gr/cm3.
