Abstract

Corrosion control methods such as coating, specifically Thermal Spray Aluminium (TSA) and Thermal Spray Zinc (TSZ), are applied as physical and sacrificial protectors for offshore platforms. Variations in abrasive material types and metal wire can influence the quality and performance of TSA and TSZ. This research was conducted through experiments to determine the effects of variations in abrasive materials and metal wire types on adhesion strength, bending resistance, and corrosion rates of TSA and TSZ applications on ASTM A36 carbon steel. The study employed an experimental analysis tested through pull-off tests, bending tests, and corrosion rate testing using a three-electrode cell. Observations were also made using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) to validate the relationship between morphology and coating performance. The conclusion of this study indicates that variations in abrasive material types and metal wire types can significantly affect the adhesion strength and bending resistance of TSA and TSZ coatings on ASTM A36 carbon steel. The highest average adhesion strength was obtained from TSA coating specimens with aluminum oxide abrasive material and Metallisation metal wire, measuring 17.89 MPa. Conversely, the lowest average adhesion strength was found in TSZ coating specimens with garnet abrasive material and Dura-Metal wire, measuring 9.65 MPa. Bending test results showed that only the TSZ coating specimens with garnet abrasive material and Dura-Metal wire experienced major cracking. Corrosion rate testing revealed that the specimen with the best corrosion resistance was the TSA coating with aluminum oxide abrasive material and Metallisation wire, exhibiting a corrosion rate of 0.002 mmpy. In contrast, the lowest resistance was found in the TSZ coating with garnet abrasive material and Dura-Metal wire, which had a corrosion rate of 0.370 mmpy.
