Abstract

Carbon emissions are the release of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This process occurs both naturally and as a result of human activities, with human activities being the largest contributor to the increase in carbon emissions in the atmosphere. The transportation sector, which contributes a high amount of carbon emissions, is often found in commercial areas, one of which is malls. One of the most crowded malls in Surabaya is Pakuwon City Mall Surabaya, and research is needed on how the emissions from the transportation that passes through are absorbed. The research titled "Analysis of the Efficiency of Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Emission Absorption at Pakuwon City Mall Surabaya" aims to determine the amount of CO₂ emissions produced in the transportation sector of Pakuwon City Mall Surabaya, as well as to assess the efficiency of CO₂ emission absorption by green vegetation in the parking area. Then it concludes with planning green vegetation innovations to enhance the absorption of CO₂ emissions from the transportation sector of Pakuwon City Mall Surabaya. The calculation of CO₂ gas emissions in the transportation sector of Pakuwon City Mall Surabaya begins with an inventory of the number of visitor vehicles (cars and motorcycles) obtained from the management of PT. Pakuwon Jati Tbk, along with supporting data obtained from field surveys. In the calculation of CO₂ emissions from the transportation sector, the volume of fuel per kilometer for each vehicle used by visitors is taken from the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 12 of 2010. In this study, it is limited that the fuel used by visitors to Pakuwon City Mall Surabaya is RON 88 fuel. The method for calculating the amount of carbon emissions in the transportation sector uses local emission factors listed in the Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory Guidelines for the Energy Sector by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and the calorific value for RON 88 fuel obtained from the Greenhouse Gas Inventory Guidelines Book II by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (LHK). The calculation of the absorption capacity of each green vegetation in the existing condition is obtained from the literature, taking into account the specifications of the green vegetation itself. It was found that the CO₂ emissions from the transportation sector amounted to 499,214 kg CO₂. An inventory of green vegetation in the parking area was conducted, and Lee Kuan Yew plants, Bougainvillea, and Frangipani trees were found. The efficiency level of CO₂ gas emission absorption from the transportation sector by the green vegetation in the parking area was found to be 5.19% for cars and 1.05% for motorcycles. Therefore, a green vegetation plan in the form of a Green Open Space was developed in the area around Pakuwon City Mall Surabaya, covering an area of 1 hectare, which is capable of absorbing 7852 kg of CO₂ per month. The planning of Green Open Space uses a multilayering concept to enhance CO₂ gas emission absorption, with selected plants including banyan trees, mango trees, and red shoot plants. The planning resulted in an efficiency of CO₂ emission absorption from the transportation sector by green vegetation reaching 20.42%.
