Abstract

In the era of globalization, advancements in maritime technology support the need for fast and efficient patrol boats. Patrol boats play a crucial role in maintaining maritime security, conducting search and rescue operations, and monitoring illegal activities. With increasingly sophisticated maritime crimes, law enforcement agencies require patrol boats with optimal performance. Most patrol boats in Indonesia still utilize conventional propulsion systems. This study aims to analyze the efficiency of using the Surface Drive System (SDS) on an 18-meter Very Fast Patrol Boat (VFPB) with a service speed of 50 knots, compared to its initial Stern Drive propulsion system. The technical analysis was conducted using Maxsurf software, while the economic analysis covered operational and investment costs. The SDS was varied by creating a notch on the transom with four depths: 110 mm, 220 mm, 330 mm, and 440 mm. The results indicate that the SDS with a 440 mm notch is the most efficient configuration. At a speed of 50 knots, the fourth SDS variation requires 1,329.11 kW of power, significantly lower than the Stern Drive, which requires 1,693.21 kW. The propeller efficiency of the SDS reaches 62%, effectively supporting the vessel's operations. In terms of annual fuel consumption, the VFPB with the SDS propulsion system consumes 214,252 liters per year at a cost of IDR 3,920,814,284.29, which is more economical compared to the Stern Drive, which consumes 272,945 liters per year at a cost of IDR 4,994,890,834.94. Thus, the SDS can reduce fuel costs by up to 22%. Based on the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), the SDS shows positive growth of 2.3% in the 20th year. This demonstrates that the SDS is more efficient both technically and economically compared to the Stern Drive, making it a superior alternative for enhancing patrol boat performance.
