Abstract

Electrical energy is one of the most essential needs to support the activities of modern society today, ranging from households, commercial sectors, industries, transportation, and more. Human activities will be disrupted in the absence of electrical energy. Electrical energy can be generated by a generator through an energy conversion process. Conventional diesel powered power plants are known to be easy to use and regulate; however, these power plants have a negative impact on the environment due to pollution. Therefore, this study was designed to address environmental issues by replacing the internal combustion engine prime mover with an electric motor as a simulator for the research. There are two settings for operating a generator: the prime mover and the excitation system. In this study, a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) was used to control the prime mover, while a semiconverter was used for the excitation system. In its implementation, the VSD and semiconverter controls were able to regulate the generator to produce a frequency of 50 Hz and an output voltage of 380 V in accordance with the specifications of the synchronous generator used. However, the system still lacks stability in regulating the generator when connected in parallel with the grid.
