Abstract

Spare part management is a crucial aspect in ensuring equipment reliability and smooth operation of petrochemical plants, considering the significant impact of losses due to stockouts. Currently, the traditional approach based on frequency of use is considered less effective in anticipating maintenance needs. This study develops a new classification method for spare part inventory management using a multi-criteria approach that includes spare part criticality, demand patterns, and lead time. The research data were taken from interviews with nine participants and historical data on spare part usage stored in the SAP system. Determining criticality using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method resulted in priority criteria, namely Safety & Environment (0.33944), Maintenance Strategy (0.23908), Stockout Impact (0.19774), Interchangeable Part (0.12399), and Probability of Failure (0.09975). Furthermore, three-dimensional analysis and decision tree resulted in 36 classification combinations that became the basis for determining the spare part stock strategy. The implementation of the strategy carried out on 30 spare parts showed significant changes, where 1 became Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), 5 became stock items, 12 were minimal stock, and 12 remained non-stock. With the implementation of this multi-criteria-based stock policy, spare part management becomes more optimal, the risk of stockout can be minimized, and fertilizer factory operations can run more efficiently. This research provides a strategic contribution to the optimization of spare part inventory management, while supporting the smooth operation of fertilizer plant in Indonesia.
