Abstract

This proposal aims to explore the theory of Adaptable Architecture as an architectural solution in providing shelter and safety during tectonic earthquakes. The proposal analyzes design strategies that enable structural and functional adaptation of buildings in disaster situations. By utilizing adaptive structural technologies and the principles of changeable architecture, this proposal presents an innovative design framework to create buildings that are resilient to tectonic earthquakes and flexible in function. The framework used is the Concept-based Framework, which establishes the main idea and organization first before adjusting the other elements. The Adaptable Architecture approach is used to design buildings that can respond to changing needs and environmental conditions, including natural disasters. The method applied is Architectural Tectonics, which is how materials combine, interact, and contribute to the form, function of the building, and the overall aesthetic and functional experience of the space. The tools used include 3D model software and building simulation to visualize and test the adaptability and resilience of the design in various disaster scenarios. This proposal proposes an elementary school building that can transform into an efficient and safe evacuation center during and after an earthquake, reducing the risk and impact of earthquakes on the community. The concept incorporates various adaptive features such as adaptive structures, movable walls, modular furniture, and energy-efficient systems to increase the adaptability and sustainability of the building.
