Abstract

This design integrates perception theory, multisensory design, and Salutogenic approach with the objective of creating a positive perception for enhancing the user's well-being and supporting the recovery process. This design responds to the urgency of individuals with schizophrenia (ODS) who experience perceptual distortion in the rehabilitation process to prevent deterioration and triggers of the symptoms. Adopting the Salutogenic approach, this project focuses on strengthening the Sense of Coherence: Comprehensibility, Manageability, and Meaningfulness that defines the room programming and meaningful recovery therapies. Force-based framework analyses elements that form design, such as sun exposure, wind direction, societal stigma, gathering culture, privacy, and circulation. Literature studies, case studies, and interviews are also conducted to establish three main concepts: Therapeutic, Security, and Interconnection. Therapeutic, by facilitating active and passive recovery processes for ODS and avoids sensory overload by regulating openings, orientation, and ornament selection. Security, by ensuring their safety without making them feel isolated or marginalised through the mass arrangement, placement of nurse stations and material selection. Interconnection, by providing spaces for ODS to connect with several aspects—other ODS, caregivers, and nature—such as communal spaces, gardening area, reading area, and sensory garden. The Naung Asa demonstrates that embodying perception theory and a salutogenic approach can assemble an environment that supports schizophrenia recovery, enabling ODS to live with hope and be empowered to experience an ideal life as well as supporting their physical and emotional well-being through therapy and social interactions.
