Abstract

In the era of globalization, diplomacy has become an essential instrument for a country's influence, including through the promotion of the BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing) program, which aims to introduce Indonesian culture and encourage Bahasa Indonesia to become an international language. BIPA learning is generally targeted at young adult foreign nationals who plan to continue their education or work in Indonesia. However, BIPA education currently faces several challenges, such as a lack of grammatical reasoning explanations, limited vocabulary, insufficient exercise variations, and minimal visual elements in government-issued textbooks. Additionally, learners often struggle with memorizing vocabulary, pronouncing words, understanding grammar, and experiencing boredom with learning materials. Therefore, an interactive book is needed as a supplementary resource to complement the main textbook. This project employs a qualitative method and involves a literature review on BIPA, its learning objectives, previous research, and book design elements. Data collection includes interviews with stakeholders and BIPA instructors, observations, focus group discussions with adult BIPA learners, and an analysis of existing materials. The design concept is then developed through experimental studies to create supplementary content and exercises focusing on grammar and vocabulary. The material will be further refined into an interactive book and tested through user trials and expert validation. This project is expected to serve as an educational supplement that helps BIPA learners better understand the Indonesian language.
