Abstract

The 150 kV transmission line within PT. Vale Indonesia's electrical system is a critical subsystem for maintaining continuous production processes. Over the past five years, PT. Vale Indonesia has experienced frequent blackouts due to lightning strikes on the transmission line. Given the location of the system in an ultrabasic rock area with high metal content, resulting in high lightning intensity, a comprehensive evaluation of the high voltage insulation system is imperative. To mitigate the increased risk to the system from direct lightning strikes and minimize the occurrence of backflashovers or flashovers on the transmission line, optimizing footing resistance is crucial. This analysis was conducted by modelling the transmission line using a multi-story approach, where each parameter aligns with actual system parameters. The analysis was performed using the EMTP-ATP application. Results indicated that as footing resistance increases across various magnitudes of lightning impulse current, there is a significant voltage rise in the transmission system. Consequently, this increases the likelihood of insulator failure along the transmission line.
