Abstract

The Indonesian government seeks to achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE) through the development of new and renewable energy (EBT), one of which is the implementation of biomass co-firing in Steam Power Plants (PLTU). The data used are the results of the comparison of system performance before co-firing (May 15 - June 14, 2023) and after cofiring (April 14 - May 14, 2024), with data collection at 10:00 a.m. WITA every day. Co-firing is a method of partially substituting coal with biomass to generate electricity. This study aims to analyze the effect of biomass co-firing on the Rankine cycle at PLTU Jeranjang and evaluate the feasibility of its application. The method used is comparative analysis by calculating and comparing the efficiency of the main components of the PLTU including turbines, pumps, boilers, and generators, as well as thermal efficiency before and after the implementation of cofiring using waste pellets with an optimal composition of 3%. The results showed variations in efficiency changes in the main components of the plant. The generator and boiler experienced an increase in efficiency, while the steam turbine and pump experienced a decrease. The overall thermal efficiency decreased slightly from 34.08% to 33.83%. It can be concluded that although the implementation of biomass co-firing presents challenges in maintaining energy conversion efficiency, the system is still feasible with further optimization to maximize its benefits.
