Abstract

Shipbuilding project management often faces challenges in terms of scheduling and cost control, mainly due to the high uncertainty in the construction process. Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) offers an alternative approach to address this uncertainty through buffer management. This research aims to evaluate the application of CCPM and buffer management in a Security Accommodation Vessel (SAV) construction project. This research uses a case study on the SAV construction project. Project data, including activity durations, dependencies, and resources, were collected and analysed. Root Square Error Method (RSEM) was used to calculate the buffer size. Project scheduling performance before and after the implementation of CCPM was compared to measure the impact of the resulting optimisation. Comparison of scheduling before and after the application of CCPM showed an optimisation of the SAV construction project duration. The use of buffer management with RSEM has proven effective in reducing potential delays and improving the predictability of project completion. This research highlights the benefits of applying CCPM and buffer management in a complex shipbuilding project.RSEM provides an accurate buffer calculation method that takes into account the variability of activity durations. The implementation of CCPM contributes to the optimisation of project duration and improvement of resource allocation efficiency.Further research is recommended to explore the application of CCPM on different types of shipbuilding projects and compare different buffer calculation methods.
