Abstract

One of the important components in electric cars is a battery with nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) as one of the best types of batteries. nickel (II) sulfate hexahydrate (NiSO4.6H2O) compounds are needed as a material for the cathode of NMC batteries. This study aimed to analyze the effect of staged recrystallization on crystals to increase the nickel content. The material used is ferronickel smelted from a mini blast furnace. The leaching process was carried out with 120 ml of 2M H2SO4 solution, at a temperature of 90°C for 6 hours with a stirring speed of 200 rpm. The precipitation process was carried out at a temperature of 90°C using a CaCO3 solution up to a pH of 3.01. The precipitated filtrate was heated at a temperature of 90°C for 24 hours. Then, the heated filtrate was crystallized at a temperature of 60°C for 4 hours. The washed filtrate goes through a staged recrystallization process, in which the washed filtrate is crystallized. Then, the crystals were washed using aquadest again. After that, the filtrate from the washing was re-crystallized again (once staged recrystallization). In two stages of recrystallization, the crystals resulting from once stages of recrystallization are washed again with distilled water and the filtrate is crystallized again (twice recrystallized in stages). This process is carried out continuously for three and four repetitions with the final result in the form of NiSO4.6H2O crystals. The best results of stagedrecrystallization were obtained at twice variation with content of 52,5% Ni and Ni recovery of 98,57%.
