Abstract

The visual quality of a vehicle can be judged by how good the paint job is. One factor that can improve the quality of vehicle paint is to increase the gloss value of the paint. The gloss value of the paint depends on the parameters of the painting robot which affect the paint results, such as the LW (Long Wave) or irregular surface waves formed from the paint that resembles an orange peel, the DOI (Distinctness of Image) or the sharpness of the reflection projected from the car panel, as well as the thickness of the paint itself. The robot parameters that were altered in this research were the flow rate of paint coming out of the robot, the rotary speed of the bell sprayer, and the robot's paint shape/pattern which is called wide & small pattern. In this research, the Taguchi method with the L25 orthogonal array was used to find the best combination of each parameter that can produce the smallest possible LW value, the highest possible DOI, and the paint thickness closest to the minimum standards. Using the MiniTab software, it was found that all of these parameters can influence the response obtained. The most optimal results predicted by the software for all the parameters are flow rate = 600 cc/min, rotary speed = 28,000 RPM, wide pattern = 300 L/min, and small pattern = 200 L/min. The average response values obtained were LW = 2.6, DOI = 89.7, and paint thickness = 39.7 µm
