Abstract

Crime is an illegal act that can threaten the security and peace of society, including acts such as theft, robbery, and violence. Various factors both internal and external can affect the crime rate in an area. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence the crime rate in East Java Province from 2019 to 2022 using the panel data regression method. The factors to be analyzed include educational factors using the average length of schooling, economic factors using the percentage of poor people, gini ratio, and open unemployment rate, and demographic factors using population density. The data used covers 38 districts/cities with a combination of cross section and time series data, making it possible to obtain more accurate analysis results regarding these factors on crime rates. The results of the study using panel data regression showed that based on the Fixed Effect Model approach with individual effects of the five variables used, two of them had a significant effect on the crime rate in East Java Province. The variables that have a positive and significant effect are the average length of schooling and the percentage of poor people. Both variables can explain the crime rate by 76,07% and the remaining 23,93% is explained by other variables outside the model.
