Abstract

Existence of plastic waste has continued an increase in the environment. Plastic breaks into particles in the size range of 1-5000 µm called microplastics. Small plastic particles accumulate in aquatic biota, one of which is sea cucumber. Sea cucumbers with their feeding habits as deposit feeder and slow movement have the potential to be bioindicators of microplastics in the environment. So, it is necessary to assess the microplastic index to measure and assess the impact of microplastics in the ecosystem. The research aims to identify the characteristics of microplastics in the body wall of sea cucumbers Paracaudina australis, Phyllophorus sp., water and sediment and evaluate the risk level of microplastic pollution in sea cucumbers based on Microplastic Pollution Indexes (MPI) on the East Coast of Surabaya. Microplastic identification was carried out based on physical and chemical characteristics, as well as MPI calculations including Pollution Load Index (PLI), Polymer Risk Index (H) and Pollution Risk Index (PRI). Result of study showed that microplastics were found in body wall of sea cucumber, water and sediment. The dominant type of microplastics obtained is fragments with a size of 50-250 µm, and black color. While the polymers obtained from all sea cucumber samples are PET, PA, PP, HDPE, and PS. Assessment of Microplastic Pollution Index in sea cucumbers P. australis and Phyllophorus sp. on the East Coast of Surabaya showed that all sea cucumber species were polluted by microplastics with PLI values of 1,03 and 1,35. H values of 14,41 and 10,52 which indicate moderate risk of polymer, and PRI values of 15 and 14,2 which indicate low microplastic pollution risk.
