Abstract

In November, December, January, and February throughout the year there is a Borneo Vortex phenomenon in the northwest of Borneo Island to the South China Sea. This phenomenon forms continuously and is often associated with heavy rains and floods. Several previous studies have shown that the Borneo Vortex has an influence on atmospheric dynamics and changes in the amount of rainfall in certain regions. However, the percentage of influence and the areas that have a significant impact are not yet known, especially in West Kalimantan. This study will identify and map the influence of the Borneo Vortex on the day and rainfall in each region of West Kalimantan. The identification of the Borneo Vortex event was carried out by looking at the cyclonic pattern on the 925 mb streamline map resulting from the processing of wind data for the U and V components from 2010/2011 to 2022/2023 in the November, December, January, and February periods. The method used to determine the effect of the Borneo Vortex on rain is the determination coefficient which is then interpolated using the Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) technique with power values of 1 to 4. The effect of the Borneo Vortex on rain is classified into low, medium and high categories which are then mapped based on sub-district area. From statistical analysis, the power value of 1 is the best interpolation result because it has the smallest standard deviation value. The results showed that the effect of the Borneo Vortex event on rainy days was more evenly distributed for the West Kalimantan region with moderate criteria as many as 117 sub-districts or 66.9%, while the influence on rainfall with low, medium, and high criteria was 73.7%, 22.9%, and 3.4%, respectively. The high criterion is more dominant in the northern and southern regions of West Kalimantan. The highest frequency of Borneo Vortex occurred in December at 32.6%.
