Abstract

Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) is a method of managing relationships with suppliers that includes segmentation, strategy and collaboration between company and its suplliers. SRM aims to improve supplier performance and strengthen long-term relationships, yet to provide benefits in the form of reduced costs or cost savings from suppliers. This study was conducted at a company engaged in turbine and generator maintenance projects, where more than 60% of its budget is allocated to suppliers to execute its projects. The company’s projects include Hot Gas Path Inspection (HGPI), Combustion Inspection (CI), and Major Inspection (MI), which require the supply of spare parts, consumables, and supporting services. The availability of these supplies is critical; any shortage may disrupt the progress of the project. Therefore, a cost-saving strategy is essential. Currently, supplier management is generalized meaning all suppliers are treated equally, without segmentation, despite the differences in their contribution and risk to the project. The purpose of this study is to provide strategic recommendations based on supplier segmentation clusters to achieve cost savings. The segmentation is based on three categories of purchase order (PO) value: low, medium, and high. This is followed by clustering using the K-means algorithm with variables such as payment terms, the number of POs issued by the company to the supplier, and the criticality level of the commodities. After clustering, alternative cost reduction strategies are developed. These strategies are translated into several supplier management schemes. Each cluster is then evaluated against the supplier management schemes using the pairwise comparison method and the weight scoring model. The results of the study indicate that five different supplier management schemes can be applied to each segment
