Abstract

The increase in environmental temperatures due to climate change has a significant impact on water quality, particularly in hydroponic farming systems that require low water temperatures to support optimal plant growth. This study aims to design and develop a water cooling system using a Thermoelectric Cooler (TEC) type TEC1-12706, which utilizes the Peltier effect principle as an environmentally friendly solution to efficiently lower water temperatures. The system comprises six TEC units controlled by an Arduino Uno microcontroller, equipped with a DS18B20 temperature sensor and an I2C LCD display to monitor water temperature. Cooling is carried out in a 10-liter aluminum container without additional insulation. Power control is managed using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) techniques based on the Arduino, allowing dynamic adjustment according to the actual temperature. Test results showed a temperature drop from 28.1°C to 18.6°C within 300 minutes, with a total power consumption of 432 Watts. Evaluation using the Coefficient of Performance (COP) indicates that increasing the number of TEC units enhances the cooling capacity, although it decreases energy efficiency. The system operates automatically and demonstrates potential as a portable, efficient, and environmentally friendly solution—not only for hydroponics but also for water cooling applications in other areas of modern agriculture.
