Abstract

Along with the advancement of technology and the increasing demand for energy, electricity generation in Indonesia is still dominated by fossil fuel-based power plants. This has led to an increase in gas emissions, particularly CO2, necessitating efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. On the other hand, industries in Indonesia, particularly glass and pharmaceutical industries, have seen a rising demand for Potassium Carbonate, which is currently heavily reliant on imports and tends to increase over time. Therefore, establishing a Potassium Carbonate plant is essential to meet this demand. For these reasons, the author examines the feasibility of building a Potassium Carbonate plant in Paiton, Probolinggo, Indonesia, using flue gas from Paiton Power Plant Unit 3 and KOH as raw materials. The study covers processes, an initial hazard and operability study (HAZOP), equipment specifications, and economic analysis. The proposed plant is designed to have a capacity of 7,500 tons per year at full capacity. The construction period is estimated to be completed within two years, with an economic lifespan of 20 years. The feasibility study indicates that the plant is viable, with a projected internal rate of return (IRR) of 26%. This plant is expected to meet national Potassium Carbonate needs and help address the issue of increasing gas emissions, particularly CO2.
