Abstract

The coastal waters of East Surabaya is a strategic region that is vulnerable to pollution, particularly from domestic waste originating from land-based activities. This study aims to analyze the estimated water quality parameters—Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and chlorophyll-a—using multitemporal Landsat 8-9 OLI/TIRS satellite imagery over the 2020–2024 period. Image data were processed on the Google Earth Engine platform by applying estimation algorithms to four in situ locations: the estuaries of Kali Jagir, Kali Wonorejo, Kali Dadapan, and Kali Bonagung. Validation was conducted by comparing satellite-based estimates with field measurements obtained using gravimetric methods for TSS and spectrophotometry for chlorophyll-a. The results showed that TSS concentrations fluctuated between 21-24 mg/L, with a maximum value of 25.057 mg/L recorded in April 2023. Spatially, TSS exhibited a decreasing gradient from the shoreline toward offshore waters, with median values ranging from 15.788 to 46.441 mg/L. Chlorophyll-a demonstrated greater variability (0.0100-0.3000 μg/L), with a peak concentration of 0.4773 μg/L observed in March 2023, indicating a phytoplankton bloom. Validation results showed a weak correlation for TSS (R² = 0.001) and a strong correlation for chlorophyll-a (R² = 0.932), indicating that chlorophyll-a estimation is more accurate for coastal water quality monitoring.
