Abstract

Mount Lewotobi is one of the active volcanoes located in Wulanggitang District, East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. In November 2024, Mount Lewotobi Laki was detected to show high volcanic activity. The volcanic activity was detected to emit significant sources of volatile gas emissions and lava flows that can affect air quality, buildings and surrounding ecosystems. The evaluation of SO₂ emissions and hot areas was analyzed using remote sensing data from Sentinel-5P (TROPOMI), Sentinel-2 (MSI) and Landsat-8 (OLI). Data processing uses the Google Earth Engine platform to obtain spatial and temporal analysis of SO₂ content in the air and heat sources generated through volcanic activity. The Normalized Hotspot Indices (NHI) method was applied to identify and map hot areas generated by volcanic activity. The resulting SO₂ levels showed a maximum value of 300,831 µg/m³ and an average of 71,928 µg/m³ which occurred on November 9, 2024. The classification of the distribution of hotspots shown is in the high to medium to low range. The total number of hotspots measured was 51 on Landsat-8 and 278 on Sentinel-2. The results of statistical tests carried out on Landsat-8 data did not have a significant value of SO₂ measurements on hot area measurements and were inversely proportional to the results of Sentinel-2 measurements.
