Abstract

The limited availability of supporting facilities for practical work in vocational education often leads to less-than-optimal learning outcomes. Fluid mechanics is one of the essential subjects in vocational education within the fields of science and technology. This subject addresses topics such as flow losses in piping systems, commonly referred to as head losses. However, head losses are often perceived as challenging by vocational students due to the mathematical and physical calculations required, which are not typically aligned with the practical emphasis of vocational education. To address this challenge, a head loss simulator has been developed to facilitate a better understanding of the concept. The simulator is designed using simulations and calculations based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which serve as the primary reference for determining head loss values. The simulation results were validated through testing on the head loss simulator, which was constructed according to the specified design.Performance testing of the sensors used in the simulator demonstrated high accuracy, with water flow sensors achieving accuracy rates of 99.93%, 99.87%, and 99.83%, and pressure transmitters achieving accuracy rates of 99.39% and 99.59%. Furthermore, head loss values were calculated under four conditions: both valves open, valve 1 open with valve 2 closed, valve 2 open with valve 1 closed, and both valves closed. The respective head loss values recorded by the simulator were 0.668 m, 0.833 m, 0.836 m, and 0.952 m
