Abstract

The Kali Jagir is one of the tributaries of the Sungai Brantas, playing a crucial role as a raw water source for PDAM Surya Sembada in Surabaya. Its downstream location within the Sungai Brantas makes the Kali Jagir a site for the accumulation of pollutants originating from upstream and midstream segmentsHuman activities along the Kali Jagir, including domestic and industrial sectorscontribute to pollutant loads, leading to high concentrations of parameters such as Turbidity, TDS, TOC, and Total Coliform. This study aims to analyze the performance of nanofiltration membranes and examine the effects of operational time, the use of sand filter as pretreatment, variations in recovery rates, and different types of nanofiltration membranes within the nanofiltration membrane technology system in reducing Turbidity, TDS, TOC, and Total Coliform parameters in drinking water treatment. The raw water is pretreated using Al₂(SO₄)₃ coagulant before being fed into a sand filter (slow sand filter) with a filtration rate of 0.4 m/h as a pretreatment stage before undergoing nanofiltration membrane treatment. The nanofiltration membranes used have recovery rates of 30% and 60%. The membrane types applied are NF30-2514 and NF90-2514. The reactor system operates intermittently for 10 days under a pressure of 60 psi. Sample analysis for Turbidity, TDS, TOC, and Total Coliform parameters follows the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 02 of 2023. The results obtained from nanofiltration membrane treatment with variations in sand filter pretreatment, recovery rates, and membrane types showed significant effects on the removal efficiency of turbidity, TDS, TOC, and Total Coliform parameters. The nanofiltration membrane unit utilizing sand filter pretreatment and operating at a 60% recovery rate with the NF90-2514 membrane demonstrated the highest performance, achieving average rejection rates of 83.58% for turbidity (outlet: 0.46 NTU), 69.65% for TDS (outlet: 118.5 mg/L), 51.18% for TOC (outlet: 3.08 mg/L), and 100% for Total Coliform (outlet: 0 MPN/100 mL)Meanwhile, the best performance among the group without sand filter pretreatment was also achieved at a 60% recovery rate using the NF90-2514 membrane, with average rejection rates of 82.06% for turbidity (outlet: 0.94 NTU), 65.76% for TDS (outlet: 155.50 mg/L), 99.14% for Total Coliform (outlet: 7.50 MPN/100 mL), and 35.86% for TOC (outlet: 5.54 mg/L).
