Abstract

The growing use of Subscription Video-on-Demand (SVoD) service in Indonesia has not only changed how users consume media but also how they interact with digital platforms. Alongside this growth, workaround practices have emerged as users attempt to bypass system limitations or restrictions. This research focuses on understanding the forms and underling causes of workarounds among SVoD users in Indonesia. A qualitative research method was used, with open coding applied to analyze interview and observation data. Through this process, five types of workarounds were identified. Three are non-IT-based including account sharing, repeated exploitation of free trial periods, and the role of makers who design and distribute workaround methods. The remaining two are IT-based, involving the use of third-party applications and viertual private networks to bypass platform restrictions. The study also identifies six factors that drive these practices, including cost-saving efforts, complexity in subscription processes, influence from digital communities, curiosity-driven exploration, premium access demands, and region-based content limitations. The findings reveal how users actively negotiate system boundaries and reshape their interaction with SVoD platforms. This research has mapped the relationship between the forms and causes of workarounds. It also compares the similarities and differences in workaround practice across three user categories: type A (Official subscriber), type B (reseller), type C (Unofficial subscriber). Notably, makers were found as an interesting finding in this research. The study offers practical insights for service providers to improve system design, reduce misuse, and better align their services with user needs and behavior.
