Abstract

The pulp and paper industry in Indonesia plays a strategic role in supporting the national economy. PT Adiprima Suraprinta is one of the companies in this sector that produces various types of paper, with newsprint paper 44 g/m² being one of its most frequently manufactured products. Although the company has been operating for years, its quality control practices remain basic—limited to comparing production results with specification limits—without evaluating statistical process capability. This study aims to analyze the production process capability using a multivariate approach focusing on the quality characteristics of basis weight, brightness, and opacity. The analysis was conducted in two phases, namely Phase I (May) and Phase II (June), using Generalized Variance and Hotelling’s T² control charts, along with the calculation of the multivariate capability index (MCpk). The results show that in Phase I, the process was statistically in control but not yet capable (MCpk = 0.99). An Ishikawa diagram evaluation identified improper machine setup and set point configurations as the main causes of quality deviations. After adjustments to the machine parameters were made, Phase II demonstrated improvement with the MCpk value increasing to 1.06, indicating that the process had achieved capability and showed better precision and accuracy toward quality specifications. This research highlights the importance of applying statistical methods in quality control to enhance decision-making and continuous improvement within the production process.
