Abstract

Lamong Bay is a region utilized for various activities such as industry, trade, and warehousing. These activities have led to Lamong Bay becoming one of the most polluted waters due to waste and debris. Marine debris is one form of marine environmental pollution that is becoming increasingly concerning, as it can have detrimental effects on humans and aquatic environments, particularly the habitats and marine life in Lamong Bay. Apart from being generated by activities at sea, the majority of marine debris also comes from waste carried by rivers. Waste from the Surabaya river has the potential to end up in Lamong Bay. Within Lamong Bay, there are seven rivers that flow into its waters. Marine debris that reaches Lamong Bay will then disperse due to the hydrodynamic conditions in the area. Therefore, this study aims to predict the distribution and movement of marine debris from the river mouths in Lamong Bay and its relationship with the current patterns in the area. The methods used for hydrodynamic modeling and particle tracking modeling involve numerical modeling using Delft3D software. Modeling validation was conducted to measure the accuracy of data quality between the model and observation data using RMSE statistical calculations, and Pearson Correlation to find a linear relationship between the model and measurements. The results of the study showed that the movement and distribution of PP plastic waste were closely related to current and tidal patterns in both seasons. PP waste tends to be concentrated near the river mouth and within Lamong Bay, both during spring tide and neap tide. PP waste in the west season tends to be concentrated on the southeast side of the bay, while PP waste in the east season is more concentrated on the northwest side of the bay. The concentration of floating PP waste is higher in the west season (the highest is around 0.04 kg/m2) than in the east season (the highest is around 0.02 kg/m2).
