Abstract

Zooplankton are key components of the marine ecosystem, acting as a crucial link between phytoplankton and higher trophic level organisms. In addition, zooplankton play an important role in biogeochemical cycles, particularly in carbon transport through their vertical migration behavior, known as Diel Vertical Migration (DVM). This study aims to identify the temporal patterns of vertical migration of zooplankton in the seamount regions of Mount Hobal and Mount Batutara in the Flores Sea using a hydroacoustic approach based on water column data from a Multibeam Echosounder. The analysis incorporates oceanographic parameters such as temperature and salinity obtained from CTD data, as well as phytoplankton abundance measured using a plankton net during the Jala Citra 3 Expedition conducted by PUSHIDROSAL. The results show that zooplankton perform daily vertical migration (DVM), ascending to shallower waters (50–100 m) at night and escending to depths of 200–900 mduring the day. This migration pattern is clearly recorded in the Deep Scattering Layer (DSL), visualized by high backscatter intensity. The DSL was identified using a backscatter threshold range of -90 to -36 dB at Mount Batutara and -78 to -36 dB at Mount Hobal. The depth of the zooplankton concentration layer (DSL) is influenced by phytoplankton abundance, with zooplankton tending to remain at depths rich in phytoplankton, as observed at Mount Hobal, which had a higher abundance of 97,985 ind/m³ compared to Mount Batutara with 21,268 ind/m³. Thermocline and halocline layers, formed due to variations in temperature, salinity, and depth, act as natural barriers for zooplankton migration. This study demonstrates that the integration of hydroacoustic data with environmental parameters provides a detailed picture of zooplankton migration dynamics.
