Abstract

The demand for salt in Indonesia increases annually due to global population growth. Indonesia faces a growing demand for pharmaceutical-grade salt, projected to reach 5,000 to 7,000 tons per year, with an annual growth rate of 8%. Pharmaceutical-grade salt is a type of salt used in the pharmaceutical industry as a raw material, with a specification of at least 99.8% NaCl (on a dry basis) and impurity levels close to 0%. To reduce dependence on imports, a pharmaceutical salt plant with a capacity of 2,600 tons/year is designed using the recrystallization method. This process aims to purify local salt to reach a minimum NaCl content of 99.8%. The plant is planned to be built in Sampang, East Java. Local salt with an initial purity of 88.38% will be refined through pre-treatment, filtration, coagulation using Na₂CO₃, NaOH, and BaCl₂, followed by evaporation at 100°C, crystallization at 87°C and 0.57 atm, and separation using a centrifuge. The product is dried with a rotary dryer at 120°C, cooled in a rotary cooler at 25°C and 1 atm, and then transported to the pharmaceutical salt warehouse. From an economic perspective, the total capital investment (TCI) is Rp 93,424,416,409.71, with an annual production cost of Rp 29,560,212,861.05 and projected product sales of Rp 60,576,618,000. The economic analysis shows an IRR of 18.78% with a WACC of 9.76%, a payback period (POT) of 4 years and 4 months, and a break-even point (BEP) of 30.07%. Based on these economic indicators, the establishment of this pharmaceutical salt plant is considered feasible for implementation.
