Abstract

Land subsidence on peatlands is a problem with far-reaching impacts, such as ecosystem disruption, increased flood risk, and infrastructure damage. Central Kalimantan Province, especially the Palangkaraya area, is one of the areas with the largest peatland is also experiencing this threat. This research aims to analyze the pattern and speed of land subsidence in the area using the Persistent Scatterer-Distributed Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PSDS-InSAR) method and radar imagery from Sentinel-1 and ALOS PALSAR-2 within 2017-2022 time period. This method combines the advantages of the Persistent Scatterer (PS) technique for urbanized areas and the Distributed Scatterer (DS) for vegetated areas to increase the deformation pixel density, resulting in wider spatial coverage. The data were processed using software from ISCE Framework, with validation of the results using groundwater level data. The subsidence happened in the peatland area of Palangkaraya is aligned with hydro-climatological properties in that area. A subsidence is observed happening in the dry season where the groundwater level is decreased. The vertical velocity varies from - 4,1 – 2,4 cm/year and -1,53 – 1,08 cm/year for Sentinel-1 (RMSE = 0,3789) and ALOS PALSAR-2 (RMSE = 0,6853), respectively. Negative values indicates subsidence meanwhile positive values indicates uplift.
