Abstract
The increasing global demand for sustainable energy solutions has positioned methanol as a key alternative for energy storage and supply. This project focuses on the design of a methanol manufacturing plant that uses natural gas from the Jambi Merang gas resource in South Sumatra. The plant's capacity is set at that the daily production capacity is 954.79 tons/day or the same as 315,083.18 tons/year, which will contributing the meet demand to Indonesia's methanol needs in 2027 and fulfilling the import burden by 4.42% in 2027, which the location of the plant is is planned to be established in Muara Sungsang, Banyuasin II, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. The methanol production process consists of three main stages: Syngas Reformer, Methanol Synthesis, and Methanol Purification. The plant is scheduled to commence operations in 2025 with a plant lifespan of 20 years. To meet the annual methanol production capacity in this plant, an Operating Expenditure (OPEX) of $117,421,063 is required, along with a Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) of $158,750,488. Economic analysis reveals an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 19.81% with a bank deposit interest rate of 8.05%, inflation rate of 1.57%/year, and 30% rate of income tax.. The Pay Out Time (POT) needed for the plant's establishment is 4.89 years. Based on these calculations, the Break-Even Point (BEP) is found to be 46.88%, and the Net Present Value (NPV) is $124,778,855 This holistic approach not only improves the plant's economic feasibility, but also positions it as a strategic asset in Indonesia's energy transition, increasing its competitiveness in the global methanol markets.
