Abstract

PT X is a cooking oil industry operating in Surabaya, East Java. In its production process, this industry generates wastewater from various activities, both production-related (such as equipment washing, process area cleaning, and others) and non-production-related
(such as wastewater from bathrooms and the canteen). PT X has a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that functions to treat wastewater resulting from equipment washing and work area cleaning. This WWTP has been operating since 2007 and has never undergone optimization since its initial operation. Based on monitoring conducted by the WWTP management, the peak flow treated by the WWTP only reaches 25–50 m³/day, with an average flow of around 10 m³/day. This figure is far below the designed treatment capacity of 100 m³/day, making the WWTP operationally inefficient. The method used in this optimization activity involves collecting both primary and secondary data as needed. An evaluation is then carried out for each treatment unit in PT X’s WWTP, based on applicable design criteria. Subsequently, scenarios are developed according to operational requirements, along with the development of models for both the existing WWTP and the planned scenarios. The result of this planning shows that the WWTP is operating inefficiently, as the actual treated flow is only 9.75 m³/day. This indicates the need for changes in the operation of certain units. The units that will remain in operation to ensure the WWTP functions optimally are the collection sump, ABR II unit, clarifier unit, and temporary storage tank. These units were selected based on the suitability of design criteria and the modeling results using SUMO software.
