Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the protection coordination of the electrical system and the arc flash hazard analysis at PT Polytama Propindo, which operates in the petrochemical sector. The main focus of this research is the simulation and analysis using the IEEE 1584-2002 standard and the energy boundary curve method to determine the category of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The increasing demand for electrical system reliability and protection of operators from potential arc flash hazards has become the company’s primary concern. Arc flash can generate extreme temperatures up to 35,000°F, posing risks of equipment damage and causing severe injuries to workers. Therefore, an effective protection system is required to mitigate these risks. This research uses an electrical system modeling method based on ETAP 21.0.1 software, with specific equipment and load data from the company. Simulations are performed to analyze power flow, short circuit faults, and protection coordination, including the settings of Overcurrent Relays (OCR). In addition, calculations of incident energy, arc current, and safe arc flash distances are conducted to determine the PPE category according to the NFPA 70E standard. The research findings show that the energy limit curve method simplifies the PPE category determination process compared to traditional methods. With a good protection coordination simulation, the system can detect and address faults efficiently, ensuring worker safety and reducing equipment damage risks. This research provides practical contributions to PT Polytama Propindo in improving the reliability of the electrical system and serves as a reference for other researchers interested in the topics of protection coordination and arc flash hazard analysis.
