Abstract

Hospital wastewater containing organic compounds, chemicals, and pathogenic microorganisms have the potential to pollute the environment, therefore require optimal treatment through a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Effective WWTP performance is crucial to meet wastewater quality standards and reduce the environmental impact of hospital operations. This study was conducted at Hospital X in Batu City, East Java. The WWTP for the West Building of Hospital X has been operated since 2024. The objective of this research is to evaluate and optimize the performance of the hospital's WWTP using SUMO (The Super Model) simulation software. The methodology involved a literature review, collection of primary and secondary data, analysis of WWTP effluent quality based on regulatory standards, calculation of unit treatment efficiencies, performance evaluation using SUMO, process optimization using SUMO, result analysis, and formulation of conclusions and recommendations. The analysis shows that most treatment units operated effectively, except for the grease trap, chlorination process, and phosphate removal. Optimization strategies included adjusting the pump flow into the grease trap to 218 m3/day, applying 2,1 kg/day chlorine at 65% concentration, and incorporationg an adsorption tank with a capacity of 2.200 L using iron oxide coated sand (IOS) media. Post-optimization results demonstrated improved performance, grease trap removal efficiency reached 63%, chlorination achieved 100%, and phosphate adsorption attained 99% efficiency. SUMO simulation indicated an optimized effluent phosphate concentration of 0,7 mg/L that achieved environmental discharge standards
