Abstract

The protection system in electrical power installations plays a crucial role in ensuring system reliability and safety, particularly in industrial environments such as PT. Pupuk Kalimantan Timur 4. This study aims to evaluate phase overcurrent protection coordination by considering the risk of arc flash, using the energy boundary curve method as an assessment approach. Protective relay resetting was performed to achieve a more selective configuration that aligns with the characteristics of system faults. The analysis was conducted through power system simulations using ETAP 21.0.1 software, covering short-circuit studies, relay coordination, and arc flash energy calculations. A comparison was made between two approaches: the IEEE 1584-2002 standard-based method and the energy boundary curve method. The results indicate that after resetting, the relay settings responded more accurately and selectively to faults, although the incident energy values increased. The category of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was determined based on the arc flash energy at each bus and was used to calculate the safe working distance for personnel. This study is expected to serve as a reference for the re-evaluation of protection systems and the improvement of electrical safety practices in industrial power systems.
