Abstract

The rise of beauty filter usage on social media reflects a significant social phenomenon among young women, serving both as a form of self-expression and a means of seeking visual validation. Filters that slim the nose, smooth the skin, and contour the face have become quick strategies for aligning oneself with digital beauty standards. However, repeated exposure to these altered images contributes to anxiety, a disconnect between one’s online and offline appearance, and psychological pressure to maintain a virtual aesthetic identity. According to NBC Spotlight data, 61% of teenagers reported feeling worse about their appearance after using filters. This phenomenon forms a critical basis for research aimed at analyzing how the use of social media filters influences the identification of the ideal body and responses to body dissatisfaction among young adult women. Social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter (X) have become integral parts of daily life, particularly for women aged 18–35, who represent the primary target audience of the digital beauty industry. This study emphasizes the urgent need for educational interventions, including body positivity campaigns and enhanced digital literacy, to help balance body perception and mental health among young adult women in the age of visual social media.

This study adopts a qualitative phenomenological approach through in-depth interviews with six female filter users. The findings reveal that intensive exposure to filters shapes self-presentation strategies and triggers social comparison, identity conflict between one’s digital and real self-image, and increased body dissatisfaction. Moreover, social norms and peer pressure in online environments encourage the continuous intention to use filters to maintain an ideal image. In the context of the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), subjective attitudes, social norms, and behavioral intentions play a crucial role in shaping actual behavior and self-perception. The study proposes educational interventions in the form of body positivity campaigns and improved digital literacy as a means of balancing body image and mental well-being for young adult women in the era of visual-centric social media.
