Abstract

This study analyzes the dynamic response characteristics and performance of a Truss SPAR mooring system with varying heave plate dimensions under free-floating and moored conditions, subjected to 100-year random wave loading. Through a Respons Amplitude Operator (RAO) analysis in the free-floating condition, it was identified that variation 2 showed a significant resonance amplification in the heave mode (22.937 m/m) and pitch mode (14.022 deg/m), whereas variation 4 demonstrated the most controlled RAO response in both heave (2.782 m/m) and pitch (0.127 deg/m). In the moored condition, a Root Mean Square (RMS) analysis of the spectral response indicated that surge motion was relatively unaffected (RMS ranged from 3.88 x 10-2 m to 3.91 x 10-2 m), while the heave plate was effective in damping vertical and rotational motions. The lowest RMS heave value was recorded for variation 4 (4.75 x 10-5 m), while the lowest RMS pitch value was found for variation 5 (2.63 x 10-4 deg). The evaluation of maximum mooring lines tension under 100-year extreme conditions confirmed that all variations successfully met the API RP 2SK safety criteria (SF ≥ 1.67). Of all configurations tested, variation 4 was identified as the most optimal model, as it produced the lowest maximum mooring tension of 280,492 kN, which reflects its superior damping efficiency and stability under the most severe environmental conditions.
