Abstract

The use of motors in electrical systems can generate harmonic disturbances that affect overall system performance. Several methods commonly used to reduce harmonics include active filters and passive filters. In this study, an LC passive filter was specifically designed to reduce 3rd-order harmonics at a frequency of 150 Hz. The filter was applied to a flywheel generator system with a main load of a 3.75 kW motor, along with several other load variations. The values of inductance and capacitance were determined through manual calculations, then tested through simulation and direct measurements. The test results showed that under a 3.75 kW motor load, the filter successfully reduced the 3rd-order Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) from 8.0% to 0.6%, and the voltage-side THD from 20.17% to 1.73%. Harmonic reductions also occurred on 3.0 kW, 0.55 kW, 0.37 kW, and 0.18 kW motors. Meanwhile, for a 300 W lamp load, the recorded voltage THD was 3.40%, which remains below the IEEE standard limit of 5%. Based on the test results, the designed LC passive filter is capable of reducing 3rd-order harmonics in flywheel generator systems with motor loads.
