Abstract

Corrosion is a global industrial problem, including in Indonesia, with losses reaching 3–4% of GDP in 2022. Corrosion is a natural metal degradation process due to chemical reactions with the environment, including biofilm activity or microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) which is initiated by microbial attachment to the metal surface (Jia et al., 2019). Organic corrosion inhibitors, such as secondary metabolite compounds from Robusta coffee plants (Coffea canephora), have the potential to form a protective layer on metals and reduce the corrosion rate. This study evaluated the potential of polar extracts of Robusta coffee seeds, leaves, and grounds as corrosion inhibitors on EN 10025-S355J2+M carbon steel in seawater for 21 days, and identified their secondary metabolite content using the LC-MS method. Microbiological tests were carried out by calculating the Total Plate Count (TPC) and the Yeast Mold Count (YMC) on the steel surface. The results showed that treatment with Robusta coffee grounds extract at a concentration of 400 ppm resulted in the lowest corrosion rate of 1.94 × 10⁻¹ g/cm²/day, with inhibition efficiency reaching 89.42%. LC-MS analysis identified several secondary metabolite compounds, including caffeine, chlorogenic acid, trigonelline, lipid, and dicaffeoylquinic acid, with lipid and dicaffeoylquinic acid dominating. Microbiological analysis showed that the ALT value at a dilution of 10⁻⁴ was 2.78 × 10⁷ CFU/cm² and at a dilution of 10⁻⁵ it was 1.06 × 10⁸ CFU/cm². Meanwhile, the AKK at a dilution of 10⁻⁴ was 2.31 × 10⁷CFU/cm² and at a dilution of 10⁻⁵ it was 5.7 × 10⁷CFU/cm². This study used a Completely Randomized Design with one-way ANOVA analysis at a 90% confidence level, and LC-MS data were analyzed descriptively qualitatively
