Abstract

The West Sumbawa coal-fired power plant (PLTU Sumbawa Barat) experienced operational disruptions due to sand sedimentation in one of the water intake pipes, leading to reduced condenser performance and power generation losses. To address this issue, PLN planned a redesign of the intake system into an open channel with a width of 6 meters and a height of 5–10 meters, along with the addition of two storage ponds using minipile foundations and retaining walls strengthened with continuous piles. This final project includes the evaluation and redesign of the intake structure, considering uplift forces, structural stability, soil bearing capacity, sliding and overturning failure, as well as liquefaction potential. Evaluation results show that the existing pile curtain retaining structure does not meet stability requirements based on manual and software analysis. As an alternative, the channel is designed using AZ 40-700N steel sheet piles with horizontal bracing systems in three variations: (1) 5.7 m excavation depth with 15 m sheet pile and one strut at 2 m; (2) 7.8 m depth with 19 m sheet pile and two struts at 2 m and 7 m; (3) 11.4 m depth with 23 m sheet pile and two struts at 2 m and 10 m. The storage pond is designed as a reinforced concrete cantilever-type rigid body with a 11.5 × 11.5 m dimension, non-uniform wall thickness (1.45 m bottom, 0.5 m top), and a 17.5 × 17.5 m slab with 1.4 m thickness. The design is deemed safe against uplift, sliding, overturning, bearing failure, and general stability. In the basin structure, 12 meter piles are arranged in a 3 × 3 meter grid beneath the bottom slab to distribute loads and reduce slab bending moments. Construction methods include sheet pile cofferdams and temporary retaining walls. The proposed design offers a more stable and efficient alternative solution.
