Abstract

The Islamic insurance (takaful) industry plays an important role in supporting the welfare of modern society through Islamic principles, particularly in Southeast Asia, which represents a key global market for Islamic insurance. Malaysia, with its well-established Islamic financial infrastructure, and Indonesia, as the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, offer a compelling context for this study. This research utilizes secondary data from the annual reports of Islamic life insurance companies in both countries for the period 2019–2023. The methods used to measure efficiency are the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the parametric Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). Efficiency assessment was conducted using input variables consisting of equity, total expenses, and total assets, and output variables consisting of tabarru' funds and insurance income. The results show that several companies achieved full efficiency under the DEA model, while the SFA model produced more conservative efficiency scores. On median, Malaysian companies demonstrated slightly higher efficiency than those in Indonesia, although the difference was not statistically significant. A significant positive correlation between DEA and SFA efficiency scores indicates that both methods can complement each other in performance analysis. Furthermore, binary logistic regression was employed to identify the factors influencing efficiency, using ROA, EAR, firm size (Size), and country as independent variables. The results reveal that the significant determinants of efficiency vary depending on the approach used, in the DEA model, EAR, Size, and Country have a significant negative effect on efficiency, whereas in the SFA model, none of the variables are statistically significant.
