Abstract

Petrified wood is a natural material with high aesthetic and historical value, yet its utilization in the Indonesian furniture industry remains suboptimal. The general availability of petrified wood is abundant, considering Indonesia has many ancient volcanoes. Although this material has long been processed and traded as handicrafts and furniture products, its abundant availability still falls short in meeting the demand for coffee tables with the desired dimensions.
Coffee tables with lengths of 1–2 meters and a width of 1 meter are in high demand, yet petrified wood slabs of such intact dimensions are very scarce. A modular product solution using a closed modular system design and macro modularity is implemented to address this issue. By combining multiple petrified wood slabs from the same tree trunk into six exponentially scalable configurations, the design accommodates a wide variety of living room layouts. The modular petrified wood coffee table is designed with detachable components, facilitating easier production and distribution. The primary motivation for consumers in purchasing petrified wood furniture is its material aesthetics. Therefore, the application of a modular system must be balanced with the design of secondary components that support the luxurious aesthetic of the material while remaining harmonious with the interior. The coffee table product in this research applies an elegant design style to enhance its overall appeal.
