Abstract

The manual coffee bean sorting process is a crucial stage in the coffee processing industry, especially in the specialty coffee segment, but often does not meet good ergonomi principles. This activity is carried out in a static sitting position with a long duration and repetitive movements, so it has the potential to cause muscle and skeletal disorders. This study aims to identify and evaluate the ergonomi risks faced by coffee bean sorting workers using the Indonesian National Standard 9011:2021 approach on ergonomi risk assessment. The assessment was carried out through the GOTRAK complaint questionnaire, a checklist of potential ergonomi hazards, and direct observation of work posture, exposure duration, and lifting activities. In addition, the 5S approach was applied as a strategy for identifying potential ergonomi hazards from the work environment aspect, in order to support systematic risk control. The results of the study showed that the application of the 5S principle showed that the orderliness, cleanliness, and work discipline in the manual sorting area were still low. The work environment is still not optimal in supporting ergonomi work postures. The elements of Seiri (sorting goods) and Seiton (arranging goods) have not been implemented optimally, as evidenced by the inefficient layout of work tools and limited space for workers to move. Ergonomi risk assessment based on SNI 9011:2021 shows that coffee bean sorting workers experience a high level of risk exposure with a total score of 9 to 13. Based on the results of the GOTRAK questionnaire distributed to four workers, it was found that the most dominant complaints occurred in the lower back, neck, and shoulders. Based on these findings, this study provides recommendations for improvements in the form of ergonomi workstation design, including the design of a sorting table with a certain slope, protective partitions on the side of the table, and cushioned work chairs to reduce lower body pressure. These recommendations are expected to increase comfort, reduce the risk of work injuries, and support sustainable workforce productivity in the coffee MSME sector.
