Abstract

Proses pengolahan bijih nikel laterit akan menghasilkan slag yang masih megandung nikel (0.75%) dan kobalt (0.50%) yang terikat dalam senyawa silikat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengolah kembali slag converter untuk memulihkan nikel dan logam dengan menggunakan metode pirometalurgi carbothermic smelting reduction. Proses peleburan dilakukan dalam induction furnace pada temperatur 1500oC selama 60 menit dengan variasi penambahan reduktan karbon dan aditif sodium karbonat. Dilakukan pengujian AAS untuk menganalisis kandungan pada logam dan dilakukan pengujian XRF serta XRD untuk mengolah slag hasil peleburan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penambahan reduktan karbon 3% merupakan jumlah reduktan optimal dan mampu meningkatkan recovery nikel dan kobalt masing masing 94.08% dan 94.085%. Penambahan aditif sodium karbonat terbukti efektif untuk menekan laju metalisasi besi, pada penambahan sodium karbonat 5% diperoleh recovery nikel 63.07% dengan grade 4.31% serta recovery kobalt 69.07% dengan grade 3.15%, pada penambahan sodium karbonat 10% bahkan mampu meningkatkan grade nikel hingga 6.68% dan kobalt 4.71%. Penggunaan sodium karbonat memberikan selektivitas yang lebih baik terhadap nikel dan kobalt.

The processing of lateritic ore generates slag that still contains nickel (0.75%) and cobalt (0.50%) bound in silicate compounds. This study aims to process nickel converter slag to recover nickel and cobalt using pyrometallurgical method of carbothermic smelting reduction. The smelting process was carried out in an induction furnace at a temperature of 1500oC for 60 minutes, with reductant (carbon) and additive (sodium carbonate) variations. AAS testing was conducted to analyze the metal content, while XRF and XRD were used to characterize the slag after smelting. The result showed that the addition of 3% carbon reductant was optimal, achieving nickel and cobalt recoveries of 94.08% and 94.085%. The addition sodium carbonate proved effective in suppresing the metallization rate of iron. At 5% sodium carbonate addition, nickel recovery reached 63.07% with a grade of 4.31% and cobalt recovery reached 69.07% with a grade of 3.15%. Sodium carbonate can even increase the nickel and cobalt grade to 6.68% and 4.71% at 10% addition of sodium carbonate.
