Abstract

The creative economy is rapidly developing as a key driver of modern urban growth and local cultural preservation. This progress has led to increasing demand for creative spaces that can accommodate the activities of urban communities. Meanwhile, Surabaya’s identity as the City of Heroes is preserved through its heritage buildings, which possess significant historical value but are often underutilized. One of the main challenges in revitalizing heritage buildings is the lack of adaptive design strategies that can meet the needs of contemporary society without compromising their historical value. Additional issues include unclear spatial zoning, which often results in new functions that are not aligned with the spatial characteristics or capacity of the building. Moreover, visual elements that do not reflect the vision and mission of the management can hinder the creation of a cohesive identity and visitor experience. The aim of this redesign is to develop the interior of Pos Bloc Surabaya with a user-oriented approach that supports the creative economy ecosystem. The method employed is design thinking, which involves stages of case studies, data analysis, pre-design, design development, validation, and final design. Each stage allows for iteration to ensure that the solutions truly meet user needs. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews, and questionnaires distributed to visitors and managers. The result of this process is an interior redesign of Pos Bloc Surabaya using an adaptive reuse approach, which provides an effective solution to revitalize the building’s function while simultaneously enhancing the sustainable growth of the creative economy. Without altering the main structure, the design preserves the building’s historical authenticity while introducing flexible spaces that can accommodate various creative community activities such as workshops, public discussions, and exhibitions. The use of modular, multifunctional furniture allows for reconfiguration of the space as needed. In addition, supporting features such as reservable meeting rooms and the interactive “Pojok Ceritera” area enhance utility and enrich the visitor experience. The addition of visual elements like murals further reinforces the identity of the space and encourages organic promotion through social media. This solution contributes to a sustainable creative economy by fostering collaborative spaces that support productivity, encourage idea exchange among creative industry actors, and generate new business opportunities rooted in local culture. It can be concluded that with an inclusive, adaptive, and historically grounded design, Pos Bloc can serve as a catalyst for creative economy growth while preserving cultural heritage and responding to contemporary needs.
