Abstract

The golden age period (0-6 years) represents a critical phase that requires an optimal learning environment. This study analyzes the implementation of role- based center learning through Person-Environment Fit Theory to optimize interior design that aligns with early childhood characteristics. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study at KB RA Perwanida Surabaya. Data collection was conducted through structured observation, semi-structured interviews, and visual documentation. Data analysis utilized source triangulation with the of Person-Space Fit, Person-Task Fit, and Person-Interaction Fit. Findings indicate that BCCT implementation conditions vary: center-based learning (appropriate), children's active participation 55-84% (appropriate), lighting 300-500 lux (highly appropriate). However, gaps exist in color aspects (less appropriate) and safety materials (moderately appropriate). An optimization was developed using a progressive enhancement approach comprising (1) controlled colorfulness strategy with 60-30-10 principles, (2) sequential flow design for inter-zone transitions, (3) multi-sensory safety enhancement for safety compliance rates >95%, and (4) child-centric ergonomics for furniture based on 4-6 years old children's anthropometry. This study contributes to the development of Person-Environment Fit Theory in the Indonesian early childhood education context and provides evidence-based interior design guidelines supporting the achievement of SDG goal 4.
