Abstract

Corrosion is a significant problem in metal structures, especially in ship hulls. To protect steel materials, corrosion prevention is carried out by a painting process (coating). The success of the painting depends on the cleanliness of the material surface through the sandblasting process. This study aims to analyze the effect of coating application and variations in sandblasting pressure on the adhesion strength and corrosion rate of ASTM A36 steel. The research method uses sandblasting pressures of 4, 5, 6, and 7 bar with steel grit 40, with two layers of coating (primer and topcoat), as well as testing the roughness, layer thickness, adhesion (pull-off test), and corrosion rate using the Weight Loss method and 32% HCl solution as a corrosion medium. The results showed that the highest roughness value was obtained at a pressure of 7 bar of 89.67 µm, while the lowest at 4 bar of 64.33 µm. The highest adhesion strength value was recorded at a pressure of 7 bar of 12.41 MPa, while the lowest at 4 bar of 7.99 MPa. The corrosion rate of uncoated specimens was higher than that of coated specimens. These findings contribute to the maritime industry's ability to determine optimal sandblasting and coating parameters to protect metal structures, extend material life, and reduce maintenance costs.
