Abstract

Track day is a non-competitive event that allows automotive enthusiasts to experience driving on a race track under more flexible regulations compared to official competitions. In this activity, time plays a crucial role in measuring performance, recording lap times, and managing driving sessions. However, conventional wristwatches often lack optimal visibility and ergonomic features for drivers, particularly in terms of visual ergonomics. This study aims to design a driver’s watch that offers improved ergonomics and high visibility, specifically tailored to the needs of track day enthusiasts, while reflecting their distinct characteristics. The design process involved in-depth interviews with two participant groups: track day professionals and automotive as well as watch enthusiasts. Supporting studies included factorial experiments to determine the optimal numeral size that could be read in less than one second, as well as shadowing and visual and cognitive ergonomic analysis of drivers. The findings indicate that the main user requirements include ease of time monitoring, optimal legibility, high accuracy, and a design that reflects their personality. The ideal numeral size was found to be between 3.1 mm and 4.1 mm, with a perpendicular display angle to the wrist movement providing the best visibility. The main design concept was formulated using the keyword essential motorsport instrument, a product that is durable, precise, easy to read, and visually representative of its users. The ideation process included the development of mood boards, imageboards, manual sketches, and digital iterations, with a design style inspired by speed. The final product, the Chicane watch, enables users to read time three times faster and more accurately without removing their hands from the steering wheel. Moreover, it delivers cross-generational appeal, aligning with diverse design preferences across different eras and audiences.
